Influence of History on an Investigation

Most of the time when we do these investigations, the history of the location is hard to come by. I mean, we try to research land, census and county records - but usually dont come up with much anything. When doing this investigation in Livermore CA, the business was a 125 year old home converted into office space. The people working in it had a trickster on their hands, someone who liked to play with lights and alarms. They knew something was there.

Right before we started our investigation the owner presented us with an article from 1896. It told the story of a man who was renting a room in the house. The article noted he had attempted to end his life twice before - unsuccessfully. One morning when he didnt show up to open his downtown business, people were concerned. They werent surprised however given the track record when they found him in the house, near death from self induced strychnine poisoning..

So, with this information going into our investigation, makes it hard to think of anyone else who could be haunting this house. I mean, it was a painful death. I could only imaging his suffering. We do not know why he did it, but it was a desperate act. Now all that is in our minds is this man, his sould or spirit bound, he must be the one.. its tough doing an investigation with this in mind. Most of the investigators were pointing questions at him and pretty much making the case about him. Even I was, to an extent. I wont rule it out. However I want to think in a 125 year old home, there are many past tenants, and for all we know, they have a story too.

All in all, we did get quite a few EVP's with a raspy, male moaning "help" In the same we also have a cackling laugh on one, and one with a perfectly normal male tone. In my opinion, more than one spirit was occupying that house. We lost sight on that though, because of a story that influenced our minds, and closed our ears to the others trying to say their peace.

Because of what I experienced at Vallco mall in Cupertino about 25 years ago, and happened to my husband as well, we decided we should investigate the history of the land. We went to the Cupertino Historical Society, at closing time, and the gal there was so friendly and more than happy to let us stay and go through lots of files. We bought several books on the history of Santa Clara County in the 1800's, and everything we read was so squeaky clean that we were a little disappointed. Because we both had witnessed a group of spirits, all dressed in period clothing from at least the 1800's, all different ages and sizes, all with a look of dread on their faces, we couldn't help but think that perhaps they had died from an epidemic or maybe a fire. We couldn't find any information and eventually gave up, but not until we recently went back to the location, which is now Macy's, to see if we would experience the same thing, or anything, and all that happened was that it was absolutely freezing as we sat down and watched and waited. The gal at the Historical Society told us to come back during the daytime and interview some of the older women that volunteer there and see if they know anything. Also, we were told that we should look up newspaper articles from that time period as well. I think that if I look into it more, I will find something that took place there. I can see how knowing the history before investigating could influence one's expectations though. I guess it can be helpful in some ways and answer some questions, however it may only give someone a glimpse of the whole picture, a small piece of the puzzle that some of us are trying to understand and make sense of.

Hi Cheryl,

Its one of the toughest things about this type of work. Finding the answers. We want an explanation for the things we experience. It will lead us to the holy grail, so to speak, of what happens when we leave this world under circumstances beyond our control. No one knows what happens when the physical body dies, especially when its sudden or traumatic. I have spent many nights contemplating those thoughts. When we have findings on our investigations where there is a clear intelligence. I feel sad for this spirit, just looming along - not moving on to friends and family - just tied to this existence. I cant imagine being in that situation.

It would be so great if we could go into an investigation and have the pure history of a location. Unfortunately most of the time we don't. Historical records, well lets say recordings in those days before the turn of the century, left a lot to be desired. The keeping of the records even less. Fires, floods and over all time, destroyed most of what was recorded. To be honest, even if we did have the research established and found reasonable accounts, most of the time the activity doesn't corroborate. When I read about what you experienced and see how you and your husband went back to see if it would happen again. Maybe this was possibly a residual haunting. You happened to have been in the right place at the right time. What gets me even more is that it was BOTH of you seeing these people. Maybe go back on the same day and time when you first saw them. Interesting to read for sure. It makes me wonder if you two are "sensitives" Thanks for sharing your story. -Lydia
